Project Information

The Youth Action Crew is identifying all the opportunities in Richfield that are youth friendly. The crew is made of students from Richfield Middle School, Richfield High School, and Center for Training and Careers [CTC]. The crew will be interviewing youth, community organizations, and businesses. Once the interviews are completed, we will design a map of youth friendly spots and opportunities all around Richfield.

Richfield YAC Survey Results Summary

The Richfield Youth Action Crew mapped the Richfield community over several months and surveyed over 290 youth as well as many businesses and community organizations. A map highlighting youth friendly opportunities will soon be available in paper and electronic versions. The following are some of the key youth survey findings.

Almost 1/3 of youth have never participated in youth programs
Top 5 reasons youth don't participate are:

Don't know what's available(43.5%)
Cost(40.7%)
Transportation(39.5%)
Not interested in anything that is offered(38.8%)
Have responsibilities at home(36.8%)

Top 10 things youth would participate in are:

Organized sports(65%)
Watching sports(61.7)
Live music performances/dances(60.9)
Hang out at a coffee shop of cafe run by and for young people(57.2%)
Spend more time quality time with parents/gaurdians(53.4%)
Record music or videos(52.7%)
Participating in the arts-dance, music, sculpture, drama, etc.(48.4%)
Have a non-profuit adult you can talk to-like a mentor(46.4%)
Going to an overnight camp(45.5%)
Getting homework help after school(45%)

Top 5 actively supportive people to young people are:

Parents(56.6%)
Members of the faith community(37.4%)
Teachers or school personnel(36.6%)
Youth workers(staff youth serving organizations)(31.3%)
Community Leaders(city council members, school board members, etc.)(27.4%)

2008.06.17 Community Council

The community council memebers were very generous to let us talk to them about the three phases of our project. We introduced ourselves to them so they knew a little about us and why we wanted to join Youth Action Crew. Darius did the introduction and explained what we were gonna talk, and passed it on to Binh. Binh told them about the first phase. She explained that we interviwed all the youth to see what they think and do in richfield. Also about the five important places that youth go to, and the top five people they talk to. Alma talked about the secound phase. She explained that we were working on the map. We put all the information that we got from all the youth we surveyed and figured out which places all the youth mostly went to. She said talked about the website that Binh made and that people could go on it to find out information. Next Melynda explained that in the third phase we were gonna take all the maps and pass it out so that youth can find out more about the safe and fun places in richfield, and also advertise about us.
